Home 9 Recreation Ministry

Proverbs 22:6 states that we should train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it. The goal of the Recreation Ministry is to teach our youth sportsmanship, hard work, respect and leadership.

The Recreation Ministry follows in the tradition set forth by Dr. Miles Mark Fisher, who during his tenure led WRBC in sponsoring such activities as basketball, softball, football, boxing, ping-pong, horseshoes, checkers, and dominoes, as well as training programs for early Negro workers of the city. The Recreation Ministry has fielded basketball, baseball and soccer teams, reaching hundreds of children ages 3-17.

Over the last few years, the basketball program has teamed up with the Police Athletic League while continuing its relationship with the Durham Bulls Youth Athletic League. These organizations assist us by providing equipment, uniforms, and other resources. In partnership with them, we have a full yearly calendar for boys and girls, mostly ages 6-12:

  • Soccer –  September to November
  • Basketball – December to February
  • Baseball and T-ball – March to June
