Family Life Ministries
Position Statement:
The family is the backbone/foundation for the Christian church and the
society as a whole, but the family is in trouble. Current figures for family
breakups, domestic violence and crime are at all-time highs. Part of continuing
the ministry of Christ is to help families grow stronger, through preventive and
the therapeutic efforts to strengthen all forms of families in the church and
the community. Families include the married, divorced, single, engaged, widowed,
elderly, youth, women and men. If we want to survive, we must build on and
strengthen the biblical institutions of marriage and the family and support and
assist all areas and stages of family life. The goal is building strong families
in our church, thereby strengthening the church.
Background:
Family Life is a church ministry designed to include all aspects of Christian
Living, crossing all generations. According to :The Christian Educator's
Handbook on Adult Education" authored by Gangel and Wilhoit, the family
ministry in the church focuses on two spheres of family relationships and growth
and is divided into two tasks:
1. Family Life Education
2. Family Nurture
"Family life education, while eventually ministering to the entire
family, and ultimately to the family of the church, is essentially a ministry to
adults...For a church to be strong, it must be filled with strong, healthy
families. What more important service can there be than the work of
strengthening families spiritually, physically, mentally, and socially for the
service of Christ in the context of church ministry? This is the work of family
life education."
"With a strong emphasis on family life education, individual families
grow strong and so does the congregation. There exists a mutual relationship, a
spiritual symbiosis in which the church nourishes the family. The family, in
turn, ministers to the growth and spiritual health of the local fellowship.
Strengthening the family strengthens the church."
